Actor Headshot Tips

There are a few tips you can remember when getting your headshots done. It helps to have an idea of what you are doing before the actual start of the session. The first thing to remember is that a great photograph is about capturing energy. No matter how well it’s lit or framed, the photo will come across as being contrived without energy. I suggest trying to engage the photographer in conversation to help build that connection. Like in acting, the more you can connect by finding similarities, the better your picture will become. Try to stay away from any posed and rigid positioning the photo will not pop and tend to look unnatural. It’s also important to know that camera angles can change the way your face is photographed. For example, if the camera is higher than the subject it will tend to capture the eyes and help make them pop. If shot from a lower angle the jaw line will stand out and it will appear stronger. Why a Headshot Photographer’s Personality Is so Important

I was reading an article by Casting Director Carolyne Barry and something stuck out that got my attention. In the article she mentions things to consider when choosing a headshot photographer. One in particular stood out- the importance of considering the personality of the headshot photographer when looking to book a photo session. We hear so much about bringing out our own personality in the shoot. For that to happen there must be a comfort level with the photographer to begin with. I’m glad she brought this up because it’s an important point. I suggest that you take the time to either meet, or at the very least talk to them over the phone. How comfortable do you feel with their voice? Are they taking the time to answer even the simplest of questions? How flexible are they with your schedule? How much time are you given in the photo session? There’s no mistake that your personality depends on who you work with. I always start by sitting down and talking with the client. A Different Approach to Headshots

Taking headshots isn’t always necessarily equated with having fun. In fact, it can be quite stressful. Actors realize there’s a lot on the line with their headshot in terms of getting work. Because of this, the headshot session can be looked at with dread rather than enjoyment. Yet, a photo session should be fun. The ‘stress factor’ should be dealt with at the very beginning so that it doesn’t get in the way. When you are having fun, your personality is going to come through. Casting agents respond to photos that exude energy. Because of this, I am always looking for ways to allow more enjoyment in the photo session. One such way that should be considered is to bring a friend along to the shoot. The friend could also have photos taken. This option may not be considered because of the concern that another person will take away from their time. But if you have a good friend, one that you are comfortable with, it could only deepen the experience.
